The World Darts Championships

The World Darts Championships: A Legacy of Evolution

The World Professional Darts Championship remains the pinnacle of the sport, though its structure has transformed significantly since its inception.

A Tale of Two Titles (1978–2020)

Originally founded in 1978 as a unified event, the championships were split in 1994 following a historic “breakaway” by the game’s top players. For over 25 years, two separate organizations crowned their own World Champions:

  • The BDO (1978–2020): Traditionally held at the iconic Lakeside Country Club, the BDO was the original home of the world title. However, the organization went into liquidation in 2020. Its spiritual successor, the WDF (World Darts Federation), now hosts the WDF World Championship at Lakeside to preserve the heritage of the amateur and semi-pro game.
  • The PDC (1994–Present): What began as a breakaway group at the Circus Tavern has become the global gold standard for professional darts. Since moving to Alexandra Palace (“Ally Pally”) in 2008, the PDC World Championship has become one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

The Modern PDC Circuit (2025–2026)

As of 2026, the PDC is the undisputed home of professional darts, boasting a multi-million-pound global tour. While legacy events like the Las Vegas Desert Classic have been retired, they have been replaced by a massive international schedule.

Major Televised Tournaments:

  • The Triple Crown: The World Championship, the Premier League, and the World Matchplay.
  • The “Big Seven”: Including the Grand Slam of Darts, the UK Open, the European Championship, and the World Grand Prix.
  • World Series of Darts: A global tour with stops in New York, Bahrain, Copenhagen, and Australia, bringing the sport to a worldwide audience.

Broadcasting & Global Reach

While the early 2000s saw darts spread across various niche channels, the sport is now a powerhouse on Sky Sports (UK), DAZN (Europe/USA), and ITV, which broadcasts the Masters and the Finals of the World Series.

With the emergence of “The Nuke” Luke Littler—who claimed back-to-back World Titles in 2025 and 2026—the championships have reached record-breaking viewership levels, transcending the sport’s traditional “pub game” roots to become a premier global entertainment brand.
